Kount Receives Patent for Proxy Piercing - Kount

BOISE, Idaho – Kount Inc., a leading provider of fraud control for ecommerce merchants, today announced that the company has received a US patent for its proxy piercing technology. This is the second Kount technology to receive a patent. The first, announced last week, is the company’s device fingerprinting technology.

Kount’s proxy piercing technology determines the accurate geolocation of computers being used to initiate online transactions, providing methods for determining the true physical location of the customer’s computer, even if an anonymous proxy is being used.

Patent number 7,330,871 “Online Machine Data Collection and Archiving Process,” describes a method for identifying a customer computer involved in an online transaction via a merchant website.

This is important to those battling online crime because crooks often attempt to spoof their actual location by using anonymous proxies to forward their transactions. In this way, a criminal located in Belarus could make it appear to an unsuspecting merchant that he is actually located in Chicago.

“Kount has the ability to see though anonymous proxies and detect the true location of the computer submitting an online transaction,” said Steven W. Rouse, Kount’s Chief Operating Officer. “This is vital to ecommerce merchants in the fight against online crime, and is one of many technologies we have developed over the years to protect our customers from fraud.”
