Card Verification Value (CVV)

The Card Verification Value (CVV) is a security feature for credit and debit card transactions. It is a three- or four-digit number located on the back of most cards (on the front for American Express cards). The CVV is used to verify that the person making the transaction physically possesses the card, adding a further layer of security.

The CVV helps prevent unauthorized use of a card in card-not-present (CNP) transactions, such as online or over-the-phone purchases. By requiring the CVV, merchants reduce the risk of fraud. However, even CVVs can be compromised through phishing attacks or data breaches.

To enhance security, businesses combine CVV verification with other fraud prevention tools like address verification systems (AVS), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and real-time fraud detection algorithms to protect against unauthorized transactions.
