Phishing Scams
Phishing scams are attempts by fraudsters to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by disguising themselves as a trustworthy entity. These scams typically occur through email, instant messaging, or social media platforms, where victims are lured into providing personal information on fake websites. Telephone and even video communication phishing attempts are becoming more common.
Phishing scams often involve emails or messages that appear to be from legitimate organizations, customers, or vendors that urge recipients to click a link or otherwise enter sensitive details. Once the information is obtained, it can be used for identity theft, unauthorized transactions, and further fraudulent activity.
To protect against phishing scams, institutions and businesses must educate themselves and employees on recognizing suspicious communications, employ filtering with anti-phishing tools, and turn to practices like multi-factor authentication (MFA) as well as regular monitoring of accounts for unusual activity.
